Prof. Henryk Bałuch’s 85th jubilee
On 24 May, Profesor Henryk Bałuch, celebrated the jubilee of his 85th birthday. The Professor, the Railway Research Institute’s employee since 1963 is also a distinguished professor at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodesy of the Military University of Technology. The professor’s academic achievements are considerable and notable. He worked as an expert in the European Rail Research Institute’s Committees in Utrecht in the area of railway track. He was the author of expertise works for foreign organizations. In the 1980s, in the name of the Ministry of Transport he coordinated cooperation with the US Department of Transportation.
The professor’s most important implementations include: new methods of diagnosing railway superstructure, heavy track superstructure, new solutions of geometrical tracks and turnouts, computerized advisory systems in railway tracks. The professor is a member of the Transport Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), section of Transport Engineering of the Civil and Water Engineering Committee (PAN), a member of scientific committees of Archives of Transport, chairman of Professional Specialization Commission of the Polish Transport Engineers and Technicians Association, as well as a chair of a team qualifying for the title of the European rail engineer (EURAILING). He was awarded medals of the Ministry of National Defence, the Ministry of Transport, the Medal of the National Education Commission, and decorated with Knight’s, Officer’s and Commander’s Crosses of the Order Polonia Restituta by the Polish Government. In 2006 he was awarded the Gold Medal for merit for the Military University of Technology. He is the author of many monographs and publications in Polish and foreign journals. His scientific output also includes 4 patents.
